Gratitude means being thankful. It does not get much simpler when it comes to practising gratitude. Simply say "thank you" to G-d for any and everything in a spirit of gratitude.
There are a lot of articles relating to gratitude at the following Gratitude Blog which I update from time to time.
What does a "spirit of gratitude mean"?
It simply means that the feeling of gratitude is coming from your heart and soul. You are sincerely offering gratitude for those things you have decided to express thanks for.
Ironically, choosing not to practice this principle costs you far more than practicing it. The less you remember to practice gratitude, the less thankful you become and the less you notice the good things in life.
On the contrary, the more you take a little time in your day to remember just to say "thank you" for ten things in your life, the more amazing you will notice your life becoming, from the moment you decide to just be grateful.
What I've discovered in my own journey of gratitude has been profound in terms of a shift in consciousness. What if something in your life appear highly unpleasant, or something that you wish to resist, hate or just go away, for example, arguing in a relationship, difficulty in meeting business or financial objectives you have set for yourself, or some other unpleasantry.
The irony of these kinds of situations get illustrated only when you decide to practice gratitude about them. When grateful, you can learn from the situation, you act from a place of power and of empowerment.
Gratitude can be a form of surrender. The good kind of surrender. By this, I mean surrender to the good in your life. Often, especially when something bad appears underway, its as though there exists nothing to practice gratitude about. However, faith comes in to play in such situations.
What kind of faith? Religious faith? Not at all actually. The simple faith in "things will work out for my highest good in this situation if I just trust and believe a little." A kind of spiritual faith in the good of the universe, in the good of G-d and the good of your life.
By having just an fraction of an ounce of faith, you can actually practice gratitude IN ADVANCE for the things in your life that appear unpleasant working out over time. This kind of "gratitude + faith" can usher in miracles to your life potentially, I believe, because you are connecting yourself to a Power which is greater than your current understanding and can take care of things, allowing your mind to rest at peace.
I wrote a "labour of love" on gratitude and ways in which to enrich your life with gratitude a few years back. I also put together a powerful "Gratitude Hypnosis" session to go with the ebook.
You can get both from my Gratitude Book website: http://www.gratitudebook.com if pursuing this line of thinking interests you, or simply, if you want a fresh start and a way to start bringing immediate, tangible, positive results into your life.
In the words of an old Celtic prayer:
Deep peace of the running waves to you,
Deep peace of the flowing air to you,
Deep peace of the smiling stars to you,
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,
Deep peace of the watching shepherds to you,
Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.
